Our next stop after Lijiang is Shangri-la, only about 200 km north of Lijiang. Have you wonder how did the name came about? The original name is called <strong>Zhongdian\/\u4e2d\u7538<\/strong> but then renamed to Shangri la since 2001 for marketing purposes, based on a booked by <strong>James Hilton<\/strong> described a fictional town in his novel <strong>Lost Horizon<\/strong>.\u00a0Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085212.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10705\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085212-1024x537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085212.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085212-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085212-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shangri La is famous for it mountainous landscape, with alpine lakes, grasslands and gorges. \u00a0I could feel we were approaching to higher altitude. \u00a0We were told we need to reach up to 4000 m, luckily we were coming from Lijiang, about 2400 m so we won&#8217;t feel so much of the difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking Marriages \/\u201czou hun\u201d in Chinese<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10707\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337-940x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337-940x1024.jpg 940w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337-768x836.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085337.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking marriage<\/strong> is a practice for the minority group of <strong>Mosuo -Women&#8217;s Kingdom<\/strong>. In a walking marriage, both partners live under the roof of their extended family during the day; however, at night the man will climb up the window to visit and stay at the women&#8217;s house (if given permission) until sunrise. If the child was born, the child will follow the mother side and raised by the mother extended family, the role of the father normally coming from the women&#8217;s brothers. \u00a0The couples also do \u00a0not stay together under one roof and remain to stay that way. \u00a0If they are not happy with the relationship, they can break off and find another one as there is no restriction. \u00a0Chinese tourists are so curious about the Mosuo culture and flock this place, near Lugu Lake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085252.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10706\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085252-1024x810.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085252.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085252-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_085252-768x608.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stopped at the middle of our journey to Shangri La for a break. \u00a0You can rent the traditional costume and take a picture with the <strong>white yak<\/strong>. \u00a0It was my very first time to see a yak in real life. Things \u00a0get worse at night when I felt breathless and serious headache after my shower- <strong>Altitude sickness<\/strong>. \u00a0Luckily I had spare oxygen tank to breath in the oxygen. \u00a0Some old people or unfit people even collapsed in this high altitude area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_131256.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10713\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_131256-1024x799.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_131256.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_131256-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_131256-768x599.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along the road in Shangri La, I found there are many stupa big and small, some were in white color and built with concrete but some just stacked up with bricks and make a small stupa. I tried to take deep breath frequently to inhale more oxygen. \u00a0The weather is even colder than before and I needed another thicker jacket to protect from the harsh wind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_152724.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10719\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_152724-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_152724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_152724-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_152724-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the cable ride, you can walk up to a <strong>sightseeing platform (4,449 meters)<\/strong> above the sea level. \u00a0Beware of the wind when you are standing at the platform, it was so strong that it almost blown me away.\u00a0\u00a0However, you can see the eight holy mountains nearby, including the <strong>Jade Dragon Snow Mountain<\/strong>, the <strong>Meili Snow Mountain<\/strong> and the <strong>Biluo Snow Mountain<\/strong>. Bodies of dead are chopped up and offered to vultures to feed on. Tibetan believe vultures representing angel that will bring the souls to heaven. \u00a0There are tourists, mostly local from other part of China interested in the sky burial and see the sky burial funeral. \u00a0I don&#8217;t dare at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_154117.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10722\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_154117-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_154117.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_154117-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20130609_154117-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old Town &amp;\u00a0Songzanlin Lamasery &amp; Guishan Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Songzanlin Lamasery<\/strong> is the largest Tibetan Buddhism monastery in Yunnan Province, it attracts millions of tourists locally and overseas every year. When I was there, the place was so crowded as it was summer time, best timing to visit Shangri La.
