It is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan.\u00a0 It was founded in 1967 by a Buddhist monk called Hsing Yun\/<span class=\"s1\">\u661f\u96f2\u5927\u5e2b. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_102010w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1286\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_102010w-1024x594.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0I was standing at one of the main gate of the Fo Guang Shan Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_085415w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1275\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_085415w-603x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When we arrived at <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/activity\/471-fo-guang-shan-and-cheng-ching-lake-kaohsiung\/?adid=11883&amp;af_wid=1904\">Fo Guang Shan<\/a>, I was shocked by the size of the whole place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When I looked at the map given by the temple, I almost fainted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The temple is on the hill and there were many slopes and stairs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I normally love to climb slopes and stairs but it was challenging with today&#8217;s outfit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090125w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1276\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090125w-765x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"782\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The temple has plenty to see and explore but most importantly, with many great photo opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090322w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1277\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090322w-601x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"995\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The place is very big with few attractions, such as these little arhat statues. \u00a0The little arhats\/\u7f85\u6f22 were located not too far after entering the main gate.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.625;\" href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090616w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1278\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_090616w-1024x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite the challenging outfit, my mind and soul was at ease when I was walking at this huge and spacious <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/activity\/471-fo-guang-shan-and-cheng-ching-lake-kaohsiung\/?adid=11883&amp;af_wid=1904\">Fo Guang Shan temple.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_091709.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1279\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_091709-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There were not many visitors when we were there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I can spend a whole day visiting all the places and admiring the beautiful architecture, garden and pagodas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_091943w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1280\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_091943w-1024x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I was told we could stay a night at the temple and I heard there were some activities for the visitors but I wasn&#8217;t sure about getting up as early as 5.30am and chanting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are vending machines for drinks in case you get too tired and thirsty.\u00a0 There is also a restaurant where you could get your vegetarian lunch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_094119w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1282\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_094119w-877x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"682\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The atmosphere in <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/activity\/471-fo-guang-shan-and-cheng-ching-lake-kaohsiung\/?adid=11883&amp;af_wid=1904\">Fo Guang Shan temple<\/a> was tranquil and serene. \u00a0The weather was still cooling in the early morning of October.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_094816.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1283\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_094816-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is a huge iconic Buddha statue in Fo Guang Shan. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t manage to go near the 108 meters tall Buddha because the temple was just too big, especially walking with my blue qipao and heels. \u00a0I\u00a0only watched it from afar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_095022.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1284\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_095022-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The sky started to drizzle before we left, a kind lady who worked in the temple invited us to go in the sheltered hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A kind monk then handed me one of Monk Hsing Yun&#8217;s\/\u661f\u96f2\u5927\u5e2b\u00a0book, Renjian Fojiao\/ (Humanistic Buddhism) to read while waiting for the rain to stop. \u00a0She also offered us some hot tea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_101702w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1285\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_101702w-1024x898.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"512\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anping Fort\/\u5b89\u5e73\u53e4\u5821\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Fo Guang Shan temple to Anping Fort in Tainan, is about 67km, slightly more than one hour drive. \u00a0Going to Tainan is more than just food, Tainan is the most historical town in Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch build the first fort in Anping\/(Tainan), it was called &#8220;Fort Zeelandia&#8221;, currently known as Anping Fort.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was used as a trading hub and international business center during the Dutch regime.<\/p>\n<p>Some Taiwanese students were there having field trip when we arrived at Anping Fort. \u00a0It was a popular spot for students to learn about Taiwan&#8217;s history. \u00a0There is also an entrance fee to pay NT50.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_132343.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1288\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_132343-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I noticed red bricks were widely used to build the Anping Fort.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The red brick stone walls are still intact and there are a few cannons placed around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_132729w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1289\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_132729w-928x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"644\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later part of the history, Zheng Chenggong\/<span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u912d<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u6210\u529f or\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">better well known in his Hokkien name Koxinga\/\u570b\u59d3\u723a\u00a0a half Japanese-Chinese Scholar took over the fort from the Dutch in Ming Dynasty.\u00a0There is a big statue of Zheng Chenggong standing elegantly in the Anping Fort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_133538.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1291\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_133538-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is also a museum or I rather called it few small rooms in the Anping fort telling bit and pieces about the Anping Fort history. \u00a0Below is one of the picture showing Dutch war ship in the 16 century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_133117.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1290\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_133117-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Anping Fort is an interesting place to find out more about Taiwan past. \u00a0You can also rent<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a bicycles to explore around the area where many food stalls selling Taiwanese local delight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After visited Anping Fort, we walked to the famous Anping old street\/\u5b89\u5e73\u8001\u8857\u00a0which is just next to Anping Fort. \u00a0I had a Taiwanese hot sausage on my way back to the car park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_130047w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1287\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_130047w-491x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also stop by for the popular Taiwanese bubble tea. \u00a0Do you know bubble tea is originated from Taichung in the 80s but too bad, my 8 days round the Taiwan island did not cover Taichung.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_141640.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1292\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_141640-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Chihkan Tower\/\u8d64\u5d01\u6a13<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Chihkan Tower is located in the city, not far away from the Anping Fort.\u00a0Chihkan Tower was also built by the Dutch originally. However, the building is quite old and would be better if more maintenance is done.\u00a0 It is both confusing and interesting to see there is a combination of Dutch and Chinese style building in the architectural parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_143127.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1296\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_143127-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chikan Tower is also called Provintia, it means eternity in Dutch.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.625;\" href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_143411.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1297\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_143411-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are in total 9 statues of turtles,each carrying a stone plate on its back near a small pond in Chihkan Tower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142316.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1293\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142316-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the building in Chihkan Tower showing a yellow signboard &#8221; Haishen Miao&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142837.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1294\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142837-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside the Haishen Miao, a portrait showing Haishen also known as Sea God. \u00a0ChihKan Tower probably is not the best choice to visit if you don&#8217;t like history. I wonder what else could I do coming all the way to Tainan, the most historical town? To me, it is still worth to spend a short visit to learn some history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142955.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1295\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_142955-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evergreen Plaza Hotel\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We checked in to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=82076\">Evergreen Plaza Hotel<\/a><\/strong> in Tainan at around 4 pm. \u00a0The hotel is belong to the Eva group. \u00a0On our first day in Keelung, we also stayed in Evergreen Laurel. \u00a0I find the Evergreen hotels are normally quite clean and well maintained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170020.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1298\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170020-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The hotel is located next to a big Department Store, called Durban.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had a stroll in the area but we were too tired and no more shopping for me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170223w.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1299\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170223w-605x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"988\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is also a peaceful Barclay Memorial Park nearby the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=82076\">Evergreen Plaza Hotel<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170900_001.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1300\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161020_170900_001-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This morning we had a retreat in the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Kaohsiung and in the afternoon, we\u00a0had few history lessons about Tainan Anping Fort and Chihkan Tower. \u00a0It was a rewarding day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taiwan self drive &#8211;
