{"id":2202,"date":"2017-03-01T23:36:31","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T23:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/?p=2202"},"modified":"2017-04-07T05:04:42","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T05:04:42","slug":"south-korea-round-the-island-with-chan-brothers-day-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/2017\/03\/south-korea-round-the-island-with-chan-brothers-day-5\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea Round the Island &#8211; Day 5 &#8211; Bulguksa Temple &#038; Seokguram Grotto &#038; Juknokwon Bamboo Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Scenic Rusty Korea \u00a0&#8211; Day 5\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Bulguksa Temple &#8211;\u00a0UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Early in the morning we departed to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bulguka Temple. \u00a0It took us about 1 hour drive from Daegu, where we stayed last night. \u00a0The Bulguksa temple was located\u00a0on the slopes of mount Toham,\u00a0Gyeongju city, North Gyeongsang province.<\/p>\n<p>This is the land of Buddha as the names suggests, refer to the signboard in Chinese characters at the main entrance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_095854.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2045\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_095854-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The temple is classified as Historic and Scenic Site No. 1 by the South Korean government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_100558E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2046\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_100558E-544x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The surrounding of the temple are just beautiful with lovely ponds and streams which was not frozen yet. \u00a0I believe it would be frozen in the real winter time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_100746.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2047\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_100746-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This place has very huge courtyard\u00a0and the ground is nice to walk around. We were like having our morning workout.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_102408E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2049\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_102408E-1024x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bulguksa is an elegant temple in Korea, the architecture of the temple look similar to the one in Xian, \u00a0China mainly because it was built at the same\u00a0era-528, during the Silla Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/korea-temple-shoe.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2072\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/korea-temple-shoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did not get into the temple because shoes has to be taken off before entering. \u00a0It was a peaceful place to pray and to get some meditation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_102512.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2050\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_102512-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was very colorful and quiet temple to allow for peaceful reflection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_103316.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2052\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_103316-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wishing stone piles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the back of the temple, there are countless piles of wishing stones of various shapes and sizes that people have stacked up. \u00a0I heard these were &#8220;wishing stone piles&#8221;,\u00a0a gesture of wishing for good fortune, each stone within the stack represents a particular wish and possibly, family member.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104147E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2054\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104147E-1024x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Golden Pig Statue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you look closely, there is a golden pig shape statue hidden behind the signboard. \u00a0It is hard to notice because it was covered with the hanging board. \u00a0We only knew this because our tour guide asked us to search for an animal. \u00a0But most recently, it has gotten a lot of attention from many visitors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104645.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2056\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104645-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our tour guide told us Bulguksa Temple underwent numerous renovations, about 40 times. One of the time was due to the Japanese Invasion also known as Imjin War. \u00a0To me, the temple look very old but well maintained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104849E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2057\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_104849E-685x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A huge stone outside the Bulguksa Temple &#8211; stated as UNESCO Site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_110205.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2058\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_110205-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seokguram Grotto &#8211; UNESCO Site<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was a long walk for about 20 mins, 4km in the uphill slope before reaching\u00a0Seokguram Grotto, it is part of Bulguksa complex.<\/p>\n<p>It is also one of the national treasure of Korea. \u00a0There is a Buddha statue behind a glass, the white Buddha is 3.5 meters in height and sits on lotus pedestal. No picture allowed inside the Grotto.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_110205.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2059\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_113837-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Grotto is fairly small. I was not particularly impressed by the Grotto but\u00a0I was happy with the beautiful scenery along the uphill path towards the Grotto, spotted some squirrels too along the path.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_115704.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2060\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_115704-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before we reached for our bus at the car park, there were some Korean ladies selling some chestnut, herbs and spice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_121731.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2061\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_121731-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunch &#8211;\u00a0Korean Well-being Beancurd Set<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This picture was taken before the real tofu hot pot served to our table. \u00a0The hotpot tofu is our main course but I prefer just tasting the Korean complementary side dishes\/banchan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_124356.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2062\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_124356-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The restaurant which we had our lunch, less than half an hour from the Bulguksa temple. \u00a0After so much hiking in the mountain, we were glad to have a hot tofu pot for our lunch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_131523.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2063\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_131523-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the tofu hot pot, I had a lovely walk outside\u00a0the restaurant. \u00a0Having some fresh air as my whole body was quite warm after the hotpot. \u00a0Pretty sad to see no more leaves on the tree, after all it was winter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_132236.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2064\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_132236-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Juknokwon &#8211; Bamboo Forest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at\u00a0Juknokwon Bamboo Forest at around 4pm, sun about to set. I was a bit worried if we could find our way out before sunset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_165752E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2065\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_165752E-783x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a place for couples, holding hands and strolling slowly in this calm and quiet environment. \u00a0Plenty of walking for today as this forest is not small. \u00a0Took a seat at a bamboo swing and again great photo opportunities everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_165834E.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2066\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_165834E-1024x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were many path in this Bamboo forest and our tour guide asked if we wanted to see panda, we all eagerly said yes and we thought we could see real pandas.\u00a0 To our disappointment, there were only fake panda. \u00a0But it was still quite relaxing listening to the sound of the artificial waterfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_171529.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2067\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_171529-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a relief to find our way out before sunset. \u00a0It was very cold and getting very creepy especially\u00a0the sunlight were getting gloomy. \u00a0We exit out from a different way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_173146.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2068\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_173146-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mushroom Steamboat Dinner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We had the\u00a0mushroom steamboat for dinner. \u00a0It was very nice to have steamboat again in the cold weather. \u00a0Plenty of tofu were added in the mushroom steamboat. \u00a0Today we had a lot of tofu! \u00a0Tofu is great source for protein, good for my muscle building diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_183014.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2069\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161208_183014-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ramada Plaza Gwangju Hotel in Gwangju<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We stayed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=209422\">Ramada Plaza Hotel<\/a> in Gwangju. \u00a0The hotel is located in the city area. \u00a0It was quite traffic jam when we arrived in Gwangju, after all, Gwangju is the sixth largest city in Korea.
