It is a Unesco World Heritage site together with the Nearby Kusagayama Primeval Forest, an untouched forest for over 1,000years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22803 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_115847.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are exploring Nara Deer Park, you have to include Kusaga Taisha as it is one of the important and historical shrines not only in Nara but the whole of Japan.\u00a0 People who visit<a href=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/2019\/01\/the-bowing-deer-at-nara-top-14-things-you-need-to-know-before-you-visit-nara-park\/\"> Nara deer park<\/a> will usually include Kusaga Taisha Shrine and Todaiji Temple for a day trip, minimum of 6 hours in this area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22779 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_111833.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Thousands of lanterns Line Up<\/h3>\n<p>Kusaga Taisha is famous for the thousands of bronze and stone lanterns that line the shrine&#8217;s halls and path. Each of the lanterns represents a donation to the shrine.\u00a0 Some are stone lanterns with green moss (as above) aged over a few hundred years old.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22782 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_112431.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1441\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Kusaga Taisha &amp; The Deer<\/h3>\n<p>It is believed that the sacred deer serve the Shinto deities of Kusaga Taisha Shrine.\u00a0 Legend says that the Kusaga Taisha god rode on the white deer.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors are washing up at the Deer Fountain\/Chozuya before entering Kusaga Taisha Shrine. Chozuya also was known as temizuya, a place for you to wash before praying.\u00a0 Worshipper washes their hands and mouth.\u00a0 Do not drink the water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22780 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_112220.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1096\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Main Shrine<\/h3>\n<p>There are several small shrines in Kusaga Taisha and one you should not miss is the main shrine which cost 500 yen to enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22783 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_112657.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Wooden Plague or &#8220;Ema&#8221;\u00a0\u7d75\u99ac<\/h3>\n<p>Wooden Plague also was known as &#8220;Ema&#8221; can be seen in most Shinto Shrines in Japan. The Ema wooden plague here can be seen with the shape of the deer.\u00a0\u00a0Write down your wishes and when &#8220;Kamisama&#8221; or God in English read it, your wishes will be granted.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22784 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_112715.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"822\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>At the entrance to the main shrine<\/h3>\n<p>This is at the entrance of the Hondo or main shrine.\u00a0 The number of tourists visiting this place is pretty scary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22785 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_112908.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Main Shrine of Kusaga Taisha<\/h3>\n<p>There are 4 Deities enshrined at Kusaga Taisha, known as the Great Deities of Kusaga are enshrined respectively in their own splendid Kusaga style altars.\u00a0 The Deities&#8217; names are so long so I don&#8217;t bother to tell you here.\u00a0 The first three end with &#8220;mikoto&#8221; which means god or goddess or highness.\u00a0 The last one does not have &#8220;mikoto at the ending.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22787 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_113447.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"593\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Look for 1000 years old Japanese Cedar Tree &#8211;\u00a0Honsha-osugi<\/h3>\n<p>Once you entered the main shrine, you will notice a huge giant tree next to the Hondo or the main building. That&#8217;s the 1000 years old tree. It is quite impressive to see the thousand years old sacred tree here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22786 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_113338.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1365\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The Gold &amp; Bronze Lantern<\/h3>\n<p>A blend of gold and bronze lanterns line up the path and this is the best spot to shoot photos of Kusaga Taisha.\u00a0 I would say one of the icons in Kusaga Taisha.\u00a0 The greenish bronze lanterns are the older version and the golden lanterns are the more recent one.\u00a0 Equally beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22788 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20181031_113522.jpg\" alt=\"Kusaga Taisha Shrine, the thousand lanterns shrine in Nara\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Fujinami-no-ya Hall, the Dark Lantern Room<\/h3>\n<p>At the back of the main shrine, there is a dark room called Fujinami-no-ya which fills with many lit up lanterns. It was once used as a study area for priests but now hang with many lit up lanterns and open to the public.
