{"id":26717,"date":"2019-06-26T11:19:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T11:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/?p=26717"},"modified":"2019-08-25T06:10:28","modified_gmt":"2019-08-25T06:10:28","slug":"hong-kong-lantau-island-big-buddha-tian-tan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/2019\/06\/hong-kong-lantau-island-big-buddha-tian-tan\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have seen several of Big Buddha in Asia, such as the indoor seated <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2019\/02\/nara-todaiji-temple-12-things-you-like-to-learn-before-you-go-to-this-unesco-world-heritage-site\/\">Big Buddha in Todaiji Nara Japan<\/a> and the outdoor seated Buddha in\u00a0 <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2017\/02\/taiwan-self-drive-kaohsiung-to-tainan\/\">Fo Guang Shan Kaoshiung Taiwan<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Big Buddha, Hong Kong is a must-visit spot especially if you want to escape the Hong Kong city&#8217;s hassle busy life.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Buddha is in the seated position stands at 34 meters high and made of bronze, located in Lantau Island.\u00a0 It is also one of the icons in Hong Kong and this is my second visit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26718 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141404.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141404.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141404-768x524.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>How to get there?<\/h3>\n<p>There are a number of ways to reach Big Buddha, you can go via the Ngong Ping Cable Car from Tung Chung MTR station or by bus. I highly recommend to do it with the <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/en-SG\/activity\/45-ngong-ping-360-hong-kong\/?krt=r20&amp;krid=a1f6c79a-00d4-4980-45c9-abd30517b1f9&amp;adid=65046&amp;af_wid=1904\">Ngong Ping Cable Car<\/a> as it is thrill and fun. You are able to enjoy the excellent view high up of Hong Kong Mountains, Buddha and all it takes is less than 30 mins. If you have the ticket from <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/en-SG\/activity\/45-ngong-ping-360-hong-kong\/?krt=r20&amp;krid=a1f6c79a-00d4-4980-45c9-abd30517b1f9&amp;adid=65046&amp;af_wid=1904\">Klook online<\/a>, you may be able to beat the huge crowds and also enjoy some discounts.\u00a0 However, during my recent visit to Big Buddha, the Ngong Ping Cable Car was closed for maintenance so we catch the bus instead.\u00a0 It was still very good to experience the winding roads up to the mountain and it also offers some interesting views.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26754 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_145740.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_145740.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_145740-768x788.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>268 Steps Up to meet the Buddha<\/h3>\n<p>The Big Buddha is at the peak and the number of steps to reach the Buddha is 268 steps. There is no short cut to see the Big Buddha, you have to climb the stairs. No lifts or escalators up.\u00a0 I am still very impressed to see some faithful followers climb up despite having weak knees and mobility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26720 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141801.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141801.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_141801-768x545.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>History<\/h3>\n<p>Big Buddha was first built at the beginning of 1990 and it took 3 years to complete. Look carefully none of the offerings are the same.\u00a0 Go spot them.\u00a0 Below two are jewel box and musical instrument.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26734 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143645.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143645.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143645-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>At the summit<\/h3>\n<p>Catch your breath after the long climb as there is a small exhibition hall about the life of the Buddha at the summit which allows you to enter with no fees.<\/p>\n<p>Take a moment and enjoy the beautiful views over the lush greenery of Lantau Island and sea view from the South China Sea and if you are lucky you may catch some planes in the sky.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26735 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143719.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong Lantau Island Big Buddha Tian Tan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143719.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_143719-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Po Lin Monastery<\/h3>\n<p>Po Lin Monastery is located opposite of the Big Buddha, just 5 mins walk, it is an important Buddhist temple in Hong Kong. At the entrance, you will be greeted with giant burning incense sticks. Good news for vegetarian as there is a temple restaurant which serves vegetarian meal. You need to purchase your ticket for the vegetarian lunch at the counter; Regular vegetarian meal cost HKD 60\/pax starts at 1 pm and Deluxe Vegetarian meal cost HKD 100\/pax start from 11.30am onwards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26751 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/20190323_145528.jpg\" Ngong Ping Village<\/h3>\n<p>There are some shopping and cafe at the Ngong Ping Village, but we only bought some ice-cream and drinks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Ping<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to deer in <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/2019\/01\/the-bowing-deer-at-nara-top-14-things-you-need-to-know-before-you-visit-nara-park\/\">Nara city Japan<\/a>, cows roaming freely in the complex of Ngong Ping.\u00a0 Unlike deers in Nara where you are allowed to feed them, over here you cannot feed the cows as one of the cows died from a congested digestive tract with enough plastic bags to fill two buckets found in his stomach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26757 size-full\" 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Final thoughts:<\/h3>\n<p>Big Buddha is a must visit spot in Hong Kong.\u00a0 I highly recommend anyone to go up to Big Buddha Lantau with <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/en-SG\/activity\/45-ngong-ping-360-hong-kong\/?krt=r20&amp;krid=a1f6c79a-00d4-4980-45c9-abd30517b1f9&amp;adid=65046&amp;af_wid=1904\">Ngong Ping Cable car<\/a>.\u00a0 You may want to have the vegetarian meal at Po Lin Monastery which is located opposite of Big Buddha, just 5 mins walk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special tips<\/strong>: On our way back the queue at the bus stop is super long and it was raining plus there is no shelter.\u00a0 If possible, do leave early, say before 3.30pm to avoid the long queue.\u00a0 Always bring along umbrella and poncho as the rain seems to come and go anytime in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26732 size-full\"
