The stable temperature of caves provided a cool habitat in summers and a warm &amp; dry shelter in the winter. There are still people living in cave houses in Granada and the area has the largest cave-dwelling population in Europe!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29075 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092737.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Little holes carved out of the mountain<\/h3>\n<p>In Andalucia, cave houses are man-made and are not natural formation that humans simply moved into. There are many areas which have beautiful little holes of houses carved out of the Andalucian mountainous rocks. Guadix, to the north of Sierra Nevada is one of the famous spots to look at the cave houses, about 50km away from Granada.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29091 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092906_2.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"668\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Looks Similar to Mogao Caves China<\/h3>\n<p>When I saw the cave houses in the Andalucia region in Spain, I quickly relate to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/10\/china-ancient-silk-road-gansu-northern-xinjiang-travel-itinerary\/\">China Silk Road<\/a> which I saw a year ago. <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/07\/silk-road-gems-mogao-caves-of-dunhuang-\u6566\u714c\u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f\/\">Magao Caves<\/a> has lots of hidden treasure inside with the world&#8217;s largest collection of Buddhist art (paintings &amp; sculptures) of thousand years old. The appearance of the caves looks similar from the outside. (below picture is Magao Caves China, located in the desert along ancient Silk Road China so the exterior look smoother due to the sand storm brushing)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19981 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180608_091940-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180608_091940.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180608_091940-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180608_091940-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are still many people living in cave houses in China, I also visited the <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2017\/04\/xian-outskirt-shaanxi-day-2-experiencing-yaodong-house-cave\/\">Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e\u00a0in Shaanxi<\/a> region where the President of China, Xi Jinping used to live in the yaodong cave house when he was in his teens years during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966 \u2013 1976). He was sent to the most rural part of Shaanxi to be a farmer and ban from studying.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are differences between the <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/02\/summary-itinerary-for-xian-shaanxi-province-china\/\">China Shannxi<\/a> Yaodong cave house and Andalucian cave house in Spain.\u00a0 The one difference that I could spot out is there is a heated &#8220;kang&#8221; bed built in the yaodong cave house in China.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;kang&#8221;\u7095 bed is unique to northern rural Chinese, it is very traditional and usually build with a 2-meter long platform with bricks or clay, not only for sleeping at night but also for general living during the day time, such as eating and place to entertained guests. The &#8220;kang&#8221; bed area is usually warm as it has special heating system by coal. Great to combat the cold winter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29094 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092055_1.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>You should experience Cave House<\/h3>\n<p>There are some cave houses in Andalucia region turning museum for tourists to visit and some cave houses are Airbnb.\u00a0 You will be surprised to find some luxury accommodation in these cave houses with a beautiful snow-capped view of the Sierra Nevada and a swimming pool. This will be an alternative to the traditional hotels stay in Spain.\u00a0 These days tourist want to buy the &#8220;experience&#8221; instead when they travel.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t stay overnight in the cave house but we had a few hours experience in the cave house with a <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2019\/08\/the-best-place-to-watch-a-flamenco-show-is-in-the-cave-house-in-granada-spain\/\">flamenco show<\/a> &amp; dinner at the Albayz\u00edn neighborhood in Granada.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29089 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092651_1.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"694\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Flamenco, cave house and gypsies<\/h3>\n<p>Flamenco, cave house and gypsies are interrelated. If you are to watch a flamenco show in Spain, watch it in a cave, the atmosphere is unique. It was believed that Flamenco culture started by the gypsies who usually live in caves in the Andalucia region.<\/p>\n<p>Who are these gypsies? Gypsies are believed to have arrived in Europe from northern India in the 1400s. They were called Gypsies because Europeans thought they came from Egypt. Their skin is slightly darker and has darker hair. Gypsy often move around and have a nomadic lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29067 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092348.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"793\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Spain Cave House Review<\/h3>\n<p>The cave house that I visited was a restaurant with a stage for flamenco snow. The room has been scooped out of the rock with a low ceiling and uneven surfaces. It was decorated with beautiful lamps. Cave houses are strong and won&#8217;t collapse, it was originally dug out by hand in the first 70 years of the last century.\u00a0 The cave house in Albayz\u00edn neighborhood that I visited was being modernized, \u00a0it has every modern facility, including electricity, water, and good toilet water flush.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29068 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092355.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Spain Cave House History<\/h3>\n<p>The caves house was first started by the Moors but in the 19th century by peasant farm workers, the old caves houses have only the basic, no water &amp; only a couple of lightbulbs. Some cave houses here are abandoned but with the tourism began to pick up, some investors actually took the opportunities to buy the cave houses and turned them into some unique holiday home or rent out for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29069 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092416.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Final thoughts:<\/h3>\n<p>I have visited a few cave houses around the world, another one that I have not mentioned in the above is the<a href=\"\/wordpress\/2017\/05\/turkey-6-cappadocia-alien-town\/\"> Cappadocia cave house<\/a> in <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/04\/turkey-summary-itinerary\/\">Turkey<\/a>.\u00a0 Cave houses always fascinated me and I still get very excited when I see one in the new places that I explored.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29092 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20181227_092923_1.jpg\" alt=\"Guadix Cave House in Southern Spain vs China Magao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u7a9f &amp; Shaanxi Yaodong \u7ab0\u6d1e Cave House\" width=\"1024\" height=\"506\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cave houses are popular in Granada, Andalucia region &#8211; the southern part of Spain.
