We went to <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2019\/10\/stepping-back-in-time-in-sovereign-hill-melbourne-australia\/\">Sovereign Hill Old Town<\/a> in the morning and it took about 1.5 hr drive to reach Werribee Open Range Zoo from Sovereign Hill. You can visit both attractions in a day but a little rush, both sites are located outskirt of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30028 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_144838.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"568\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Usually, people spend about 4-6 hours to explore the 560-acre open zoo in Werribee Park. Over here you get to see the African village and animals such as lions, hippos, cheetah and gorillas.\u00a0 We had a shock when the cheetah charged toward us as we didn&#8217;t realize there is actually a glass door.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30040 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_150308.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Werribee Yaluk (River) Trail<\/h3>\n<p>This trail closed at 4.30 pm so if you arrive after lunch, the first thing you may want to explore is the Werribee Yaluk River Trail. It takes roughly half an hour for the 1km walk. You will discover the historic Chirnside Woolshed and the beautiful Werribee River.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30041 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_150359.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Safari the Highlight<\/h3>\n<p>Look out for the timetable for the safari which is also the highlight of this park. Please queue at the Safari station and wait for the safari bus (40-50 mins ride). We were told that this special bus is designed to be rhino-proof. So you will be safe from rhino&#8217;s attack.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30045 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_151104.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"777\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is an electric operated gate to enter into the safari zone.\u00a0 The driver who is also the zoo-keeper will use the remote control to open and close the gate.\u00a0 The zoo-keeper will explain about the animals here.\u00a0 Once the safari bus entered the safari zone, she has to make sure the gate is closed immediately.<\/p>\n<h3>Bison<\/h3>\n<p>Bison is native to Africa and Asia looks like buffalo but very hairy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30027 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20190612_154258.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Przewalski Horse<\/h3>\n<p>These kinds of horses are rare species also known as the Mongolian wild horse or Dzungarian horse. It is an endangered horse native to the steppes of central Asia. I was surprised such precious horses were found in Werribee&#8217;s open range zoo.\u00a0 This is my second encounter with <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/09\/china-xinjiang-ancient-ecological-park-boost-akhal-teke-horse-\u6c57\u8840\u5b9d\u9a6c\/\">Mongolian Wild Horse<\/a>.\u00a0 The first time I saw was in Xinjiang China, which is just neighbor of Central Asia.\u00a0 The Mongolian Wild Horse looks short but bulky and strong.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30049 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_154509.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The camel here reminded me of my camel ride experience in <a href=\"\/wordpress\/2018\/07\/an-oasis-in-silk-road-13-things-you-need-to-know-before-visiting-echoing-sand-mountains-cresent-moon-lake-\u9e23\u6c99\u5c71\u6708\u7259\u6cc9\/\">Dunhuang China at Crescent Moon Lake<\/a>.\u00a0 The camel walks slowly like a snail and seems to be very patience and have a good temper.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30050 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_154624.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Hippos at the river has given us a good shock!\u00a0 When the safari bus passed by, the hippo was yawning and open his big mouth widely to greet us.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30053 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_154848.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Emus are so cute with very long eyelashes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30054 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_155102.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30056 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_155246.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"691\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30057 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_155537.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"761\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30059 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_155715.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Beware of Giraffes, they steal your heart!<\/h3>\n<p>There is no glass or fences between you when you explore the safari and you will spot many beautiful animals up close. My favorite is the majestic giraffes, they went so close to our bus and we were so excited to have eye to eye level with them.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t get this kind of experience when you are in the normal zoo unless you fly to Africa safari.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30064 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_155851.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1365\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30067 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_160042.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"751\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Ticketing<\/h3>\n<p>Alternatively, there are other options where you can explore the safari with a small group and in a specially designed vehicle but cost more. We just got our usual ticket &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/en-SG\/activity\/1849-werribee-open-range-zoo-entry-melbourne\/?aid=11015&amp;utm_medium=affiliate-alwayson&amp;utm_source=non-network&amp;utm_campaign=11015&amp;adid=76952&amp;af_wid=1904\">Werribee Open Range Zoo Entry Ticket<\/a> and not the exclusive &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/affiliate.klook.com\/jump\/en-AU\/activity\/1850-werribee-open-range-zoo-safari-melbourne\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw5_DsBRBPEiwAIEDRW09sfDpxTxZn8VYFJKbL0BEueHJZC6OtOTZ7fAn5rkgcFv88WRQfQxoCt4MQAvD_BwE&amp;adid=76952&amp;af_wid=1904\">Werribee Open Range Zoo Off-Road Safari<\/a>.\u00a0 It actually depends on which season you go, we went in the winter so there is no crowd so getting the Open Range Zoo Entry ticket is good enough as it will include the safari bus ride.\u00a0 However, during summer the crowds will be huge and the queue to safari bus ride can be very long too, so you may want to get the smaller group safari ride &#8211; Werribee Open Range Zoo Off Road Safari.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30069 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_160202.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"650\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30072 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190612_160838.jpg\" alt=\"A Taste of African Savannah in Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Australia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Final thoughts:<\/h3>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to fly all the way to Africa to experience the safari, visit Melbourne Werribee Open Range Zoo instead! Jump on to the safari bus and explore the savannah and look at the different habitats of these lovely animals.
