The weather was cool in the early morning in Chiang Rai, we checked out at about 9 am and headed to Chiang Mai. \u00a0The distance was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"_Abe\" style=\"line-height: 1.625;\"><span class=\"_gk _wz\">3 hours\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0(<span class=\"_Ex\">197.5\u00a0km<\/span>) <\/span><span class=\"_KPd\" style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">via Route 118. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_082551.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1025 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_082551-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving in Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai Highway<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chiang Rai &#8211; Chiang Mai is an easy drive, there were a couple of\u00a0checkpoint stops but we just get waved through or don&#8217;t need to stop at all. \u00a0The roads get a bit more hilly one hour before we reached Chiang Mai but overall the road from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai is mostly very good and smooth.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped by this place along the highway in Chiang Rai and bought some decoration to decorate our garden back home. \u00a0We bought two white Cranes and one pink flamingo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_091840.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-378\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_091840-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Old khmer style temple next to a local tourist hot spring<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After about an hour drive, we saw this place on our right hand side which look like a temple with very beautiful architecture\u00a0so we decided to make a U turn to check out the place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120125.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-400\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120125-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next to this old temple building, it is actually a spot for tourist to stop by to have their coffee or toilet break &#8211; 5 baht. \u00a0Lots of market stalls selling their wares. \u00a0There is also hot spring operating for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121409.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-401\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121409-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interesting to watch people cooking their eggs in little baskets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_122647.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-387\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_122647-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The temperature in the area is quite cooling and with the hot mist from the Hot Spring, it balance out the temperature a bit. \u00a0We did not try the hot spring there because we wanted to reach Chiang Mai on our targeted time.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the hot spring, there was this Khmer style temple which I find the architecture quite beautiful so I went to find out more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120747.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1028 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120747-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121107.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1032 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121107-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It looks slightly different from the Thai temple which I used to see during my Thailand trip, this one look very much like a Khmer style Buddhist temple, the architecture which\u00a0is an open, symmetry driven structure, with many variations, on a square grid of padas, depicting perfect geometric shapes such as circles and squares.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121046.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1027 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121046-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I walked inside the temple building, there were not a single Buddhas status to be found. I think the Buddha were being moved out from this old Khmer style temple.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121019.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-382\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121019-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had a stroll outside the Khmer style temple and the weather was perfect to have some nice photography session. \u00a0It was a windy and sunny afternoon, weather was cool, a very good time to enjoy this beautiful architecture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121120.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1031 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_121120-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"877\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Serpents, play a particularly important role in Khmer\/Cambodian mythology. \u00a0It primarily represents rebirth, death and mortality, due to its casting of its skin and being symbolically &#8220;reborn&#8221;. \u00a0I took a picture beside a serpent statue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thai Pork Legs on Rice\/Khao Kha Moo for lunch<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I had the local Thai pork legs on rice, Khao Kha Moo\u00a030-40 baht for lunch. \u00a0&#8220;Moo&#8221; in Thai mean Pork. \u00a0I picked up few Thai words here and there. \u00a0The dishes usually served by\u00a0street vendors throughout Thailand. \u00a0I<span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">t tasted nicer once I added the sweet and sour chilli. \u00a0Meanwhile I was actually quite concerned\u00a0with hygiene of the chilli sauce because it was displayed on the table\u00a0for a long time, may be since yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120914.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1029 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_120914-834x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"717\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort in Chiang Mai<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">After lunch, we continued our journey to Chiang Rai which was another 50km. \u00a0We decided to check in our hotel first at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=71885\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort<\/a><\/strong> in Chiang Mai. \u00a0We purposely chose this hotel which is a little far from the town, 20-30 mins to Chiang Mai town area. \u00a0This hotel is also one of my favourite resorts in all of Thailand. \u00a0We spent \u00a02 nights in Chiang Mai, one night we stayed away from city and another night in Chiang Mai city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>View from our hotel room overseeing a beautiful big pond with few swans swimming gracefully.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_135442_001.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-388\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_135442_001-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon checked in at the reception at the front desk of Horizon Hotel, the staff immediately arranged a buggy to drive us and our luggage to our hotel room.\u00a0We were also given a hotel map to go about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_145712-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1046 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_145712-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would say this is a laid back place to stay with access to beautiful gardens. \u00a0We plan\u00a0to explore\u00a0to the botanical gardens\u00a0tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">We rested for half an hour or so in the hotel room, then departed from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=71885\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort<\/a><\/strong> to\u00a0Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. \u00a0The temple is often referred to as &#8220;Doi Suthep&#8221; although this is actually the name of the mountain where it is located. \u00a0The journey to reached the Doi Suthep temple was about 1 hour plus from Hotel Horizon. \u00a0We bypass the Chiang Mai town area hence we have avoided some traffic hassle and reached Doi Suthep temple by 5 pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When we reached the temple, it was very crowded with both locals and foreigners. \u00a0We managed to find a spot to park our rental car along the hilly roadside, then walked for about 10 mins to reached the temple.<\/p>\n<p>Once at the temple, there are 300 stairs to climb that are accentuated by a 7 headed dragon head serpent railing rising along both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Tourists or foreigners are asked to pay entry, 30 Baht. \u00a0There were nobody checking on the tickets but there is a sign clearly stated Foreigner need to pay to get in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_164709.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1041 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_164709-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wat Pra that Doi Suthep is the most famous temple in Chiang Mai. \u00a0Locals say you haven\u2019t truly arrived in Chiang Mai until you\u2019ve been to Doi Suthep Temple. \u00a0Once I climbed up the 300 stairs, I was\u00a0rewarded with an unforgettable view of whole Chiang Mai city. \u00a0In front of this pink elephant which I took picture with, there was this magnificent view over the whole city of Chiang Mai.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_163523.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1040 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_163523-625x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"957\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We planned the timing for sunset and the sunset view was just amazingly beautiful and breathtaking, except\u00a0it was intensely crowded with tourists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_165412e-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1050 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_165412e-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some pictures taken inside the Doi Suthep temple.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_165551.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1042 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_165551-481x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We left the temple at around 6 pm before it get too dark for us to drive\u00a0through the winding mountain\u00a0road back to our hotel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">We reached our hotel at around 7 pm and had had our dinner. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">This time we<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">\u00a0ordered the famous Thai Mangoes sticky rice for dessert after our main course. \u00a0It tasted very yummy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_192616e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1129 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161229_192616e-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Day 6 &#8211;
