bit of Tohoku region (The North East Region) of Japan, which will be Miyagi prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture and Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>If are have been to Japan many times and wanted to explore the outskirt of Japan, I highly recommend you to rent a car in the airport and drive around.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39168\" Japan railway station does not have elevator or lift up.\u00a0 It is also cheaper because railway and shinkasen tickets aren&#8217;t cheap.\u00a0 Petrol is about one time cheaper in Japan compare to Singapore.\u00a0 If you are worried about parking, you can follow my hotel accommodation.\u00a0 Where I stay usually provide car park, usually is free in outskirt but charged about 1-200yen ( 10 to 20 SGD) for a night in the city area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39164\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240615_101559-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, my recent self drive in Tohoku Region, covering :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nikko &#8211; 2 nights<\/li>\n<li>Sendai &#8211; 1 nights<\/li>\n<li>Yamagata 2 nights<\/li>\n<li>Tokyo 2 nights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I gotten a scoot flight which arrived in Narita airport early in the morning.\u00a0 Once you touched down in Narita airport and out from the custom.\u00a0 You can go get the breakfast in the Lawson convenient store where there sell many yummy onigiri, rice ball and other noodles where you can just heat it up in their microwave.<\/p>\n<p>I have scheduled to pick up my rental car at 8 am.\u00a0 My rental car company is Alamo.\u00a0 If you didn&#8217;t see the staff in the rental desk, you can make a call using the phone provided on the desk.\u00a0 The rental car company is situated 5 mins drive from the airport.\u00a0 They will send your car to you immediately.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-39147\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 1 Nikko<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>W<strong>here I stay in Nikko : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?pcs=1&amp;cid=1769828&amp;hid=336393\">Hotel Natural Garden Nikko<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The hotel has bed and onsen bath facilities.\u00a0 We include breakfast also, which is served to our table in the morning.\u00a0 Not buffet, probably because there is not many guests.\u00a0 Breakfast is western style with omelette egg, bread, sausages, 2 type of fruits and 3 glasses of drinks, milk, water and juice.<\/li>\n<li>The hotel has free parking lot.\u00a0 There is a bath tax upon checking out the hotel, that you need to pay.<\/li>\n<li>My first destination is Toshogu Shrine, Rinno-ji Temple &amp; Futarasan Shrine (Unesco)<\/li>\n<li>Narita &#8211; Toshogu Shrine &#8211; 191km (2h 40 min)<\/li>\n<li>For lunch we have Japanese western food in Nikko town which has big open space parking lot.\u00a0 As for lunch, we could not find any restaurant to dine in as most restaurants needed booking.\u00a0 For small town in Japan, if you don&#8217;t have a booking for the restaurant, you won&#8217;t find a seat.\u00a0 But fear not, there are always 24 hours convenient stores that sell yummy bento.\u00a0 We ended up having Indian cuisine which is owned by Indian.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t quite like the taste as it is not the Japanese indo ryori.\u00a0 It is very authentic Indian style.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39148\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 2 Nikko<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>EDO Wonderland<\/li>\n<li>Kegon waterfall &amp; Lake Chuzenji<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We spent whole morning until 2 to 3pm in Edo wonderland then drive to Kegon waterfall and Lake Chuzenji.\u00a0 Please get your Edo wonderland ticket from Klook to get about 20% discount.\u00a0 Buying on the spot in Edo Wonderland ticketing counter is more expensive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39151\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From Edo Wonderland to Lake Chuzenji, it takes about less than an hour drive.\u00a0 The road to Lake Chuzenji is winding, you need to pass through some winding mountain path and go up to the top of the mountain.\u00a0 At the top, there is Lake Chuzenji where people go for boat paddling.\u00a0 Lake Chuzenji is very near to Kegon Waterwall, you can walk, 10 mins to reach the waterfall.\u00a0 The waterfall lift closes at 5pm so be there early.\u00a0 If you miss the timing, you can still see the waterfall, there are stairs to go to the observatory, just go by the stairs, but only about 2 storey down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39149\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At night,\u00a0 we drove to a small town near Nikko to do some groceries shopping, buying tons of snacks and some bento to eat in our hotel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39150\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 3 Sendai<\/h3>\n<p>Before going to Sendai, we visit Matsushima and do a boat ride.\u00a0 Matsushima is sometimes being called as little Halong Bay.\u00a0 There are 260 small islands in different shape.\u00a0 We got out ticket at the ticketing window because we are not sure what time we will arrive so we could not book in advance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39135\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240617_152857.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nikko &#8211; Matsushima &#8211; 281Km (3 hr 15min)<\/li>\n<li>On the way from Nikko to\u00a0 Matsushima kaigan, there are highway rest area where you can have your lunch or break there.<\/li>\n<li>Matsushima &#8211; Hotel Monterey Sendai &#8211; 30Km (42 min)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39154\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Where I stay in Sendai : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?pcs=1&amp;cid=1769828&amp;hid=161761\">Hotel Monterey Sendai<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The location for Hotel Monterey is good, very near to the train station and buses terminal, it is in the middle of the city center.\u00a0 There are many restaurants and shopping right outside the hotel.\u00a0 The hotel has an elevator car park which cost 1500 yen for overnight.<\/p>\n<p>We paid for the breakfast, we choose Japanese breakfast which is awesome, served in a beautiful bento box served in variety of dishes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39167\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240618_081802-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 4\u00a0 Yamagata<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Zao Fox Village &#8211; this is our first destination, to see foxes walking around freely.\u00a0 There are timing for you to cuddle baby foxes also but you need to pay extra 1000 yen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39155\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lunch on the highway<\/li>\n<li>Afternoon, we went to cherry picking since it is season in June.<\/li>\n<li>Arrived at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?pcs=1&amp;cid=1769828&amp;hid=812875\">Takamiya Hotel Lucent<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39170\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240619_194036-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Where we stay: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?pcs=1&amp;cid=1769828&amp;hid=812875\">Takamiya Hotel Lucent<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We opt for breakfast and dinner, the first night we have sukiyaki beef and second night dinner was pork shabu shabu.\u00a0 The hotel is Japanese style.\u00a0 It has tatami and futon and onsen bath, both indoor and outdoor.<\/li>\n<li>It is best if you include dinner in your stay, because there aren&#8217;t any restaurant open nearby.\u00a0 But there is Lawson convenient store sit right outside the hotel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39158\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Day 5 Zao Okama Crater and Mount Zao<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To go up Okama, it is about an hour drive.\u00a0 It is very windy, best to get a jacket in June.\u00a0 Winter should be freezing.<\/li>\n<li>In the afternoon, you can visit Yamadera, we missed out this one because we were lost in the mountain for a while and ended up having lunch in Aeon in Yamagata city.\u00a0 Because the weather is too hot, we went back to our hotel to rest for the day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39168\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240619_095844-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 6 Tokyo<\/h3>\n<h3>Where we stay : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?pcs=1&amp;cid=1769828&amp;hid=51931\">Dai-ichi Hotel Ryogoku<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The hotel has a very good location to the subway which is next to the hotel.\u00a0 We opted for breakfast which is buffet style but the variety is only average.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We opted for breakfast for 2 days here.\u00a0 There is elevator car park which cost 2000 yer per night.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Yamagata to Tokyo 375Km (4 hr 36min), use toll road and the charges is about 9000 yen.<\/li>\n<li>We catch a subway to Ueno and walk around in Ueno and Ameyoko<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39171\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240620_181217-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 7<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Drive to Tokyo Disneysea, the parking is 2500 yen whole day.\u00a0 Alternatively you can also catch the hotel free disneysea bus which depart at 730am from the lobby but you need to make reservation with the front desk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39159\" src=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At night we went to Akihabara<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Day 8<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Check out hotel but our car is still park in the hotel.\u00a0 We took train and subway to Shinjuku and Shibuya<\/li>\n<li>At 3pm, we drove to check in Narita Tobu Hotel<\/li>\n<li>Visit Narita san before we return our car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Day 9<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Catch the hotel free airport bus to the airport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Final thought<\/h3>\n<p>If you have been driving in Singapore and Malaysia, it is manageable to drive in Japan.\u00a0 The traffic even in Tokyo area wasn&#8217;t too bad.\u00a0 Driving in the countryside is straight forward, just follow the GPS in the rental car.\u00a0 Also set your google map in your phone to double check the distance.\u00a0 \u00a0Driving in the Tokyo area city is a bit tricky as there are many roads and can be a bit messy so I suggest you to go by ETC to avoid confusion but you need to pay for toll fees.<\/p>\n<p>With my guide, you will also find where to stay and usually come with car park.\u00a0 You can use it as a reference.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the small town in Japan, like Nikko and Yamagata, the shops and restaurants close at 5pm, restaurants may close at 8pm.\u00a0 Reservation is needed for restaurants in the small town.\u00a0 Alternatively you can opt for dinner in the Ryokan or hotel when you stay in the countryside.\u00a0 Worse scenario, there are still lots of 24 hours convenient stores such as Lawson, Seven Eleven and Family Mart which offer bento set
