Arundel House Hotel<\/a> (Near River Cam)<\/h3>\nThis hotel has a charming old-house vibe<\/strong>, as it\u2019s essentially a converted residential building \u2014 so don\u2019t expect modern design or facilities. It\u2019s located very close to the River Cam and within walking distance to Cambridge University<\/strong>, which is the main reason we chose it. It was nice being able to stroll around the area even at night<\/strong>.<\/p>\nThere\u2019s on-site parking<\/strong>, but it\u2019s \u00a315 until check-out time at 11 am<\/strong>. If you leave later than that, even slightly, you\u2019ll need to pay extra at the machine before exiting<\/strong>. We were late by just 10 minutes<\/strong> and still had to pay the additional fee, so do take note.<\/p>\nThe car park is behind the hotel<\/strong>, and you can also access the hotel from the back entrance, which is convenient.<\/p>\nWe had three people in our group<\/strong>, and the room setup included a smaller side room<\/strong>, almost like staying in the attic of an old house<\/strong> \u2014 definitely adds to the character, though not the most comfortable. Get an Oyster Card for public transport in London
\nThe Oyster card is a smart travel card used for paying fares on most public transport in London, including:<\/p>\n
\n- The Tube (subway)<\/li>\n
- Buses<\/li>\n
- Trams<\/li>\n
- DLR (Docklands Light Railway)<\/li>\n
- London Overground<\/li>\n
- Some National Rail services within London<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
How Does It Work?
\nYou top up money onto the Oyster card (pay-as-you-go).<\/p>\n
When you enter and exit the Tube or other transport, you tap the card on the yellow card reader to pay your fare automatically.
\nThe system calculates the correct fare based on your journey and deducts it from your balance.
\nThere\u2019s a daily fare cap, so once you reach a certain amount in one day, no extra charges apply for further travel.<\/p>\n
Parking in the UK \u2013 it can get annoying!<\/strong><\/h3>\nParking in the UK isn\u2019t always straightforward. I usually choose multi-storey car parks<\/strong> because they feel safer and you don\u2019t have to parallel park on narrow streets. But here’s the annoying part: some car parks require you to pay upon arrival<\/strong>, not when you leave. If you don\u2019t realise this and just leave thinking you’ll pay after \u2014 you might end up with a fine.<\/p>\nSome tips:<\/p>\n

Always read the signboards at the entrance. Look out for “Pay and Display”<\/strong> or “Pay on Entry”<\/strong> notices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n
Many places use ANPR (camera systems)<\/strong> that track when you enter and leave \u2014 if your time runs over, even by a few minutes, you can get charged extra or fined.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n
Some towns have machines that only take coins or card<\/strong>, and some machines don\u2019t work \u2014 so have a backup plan or app ready (like RingGo<\/strong> or PayByPhone<\/strong>).\u00a0 You need a local number for Ringo app.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n
And if you’re staying at a hotel with parking, always double check whether it’s free, included<\/strong>, or charged separately<\/strong> \u2014 and whether there’s a cut-off time<\/strong> for checkout!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nIn short: always double check the rules, pay immediately, and don\u2019t assume it works the same everywhere. UK parking rules can be strict \u2014 and unforgiving.<\/p>\n
Last time we went to the UK, we got fined TWICE.
First, for accidentally driving into a bus lane<\/strong> in Wales, those are everywhere in cities, and sometimes the sign is tiny or the lane isn\u2019t even clearly marked.<\/p>\nSecond fine? Even more annoying. We drove into our hotel car park just to drop off our luggage and return the rental car<\/strong>, stayed for less than 30 minutes\u2026 and boom \u2014 a \u00a3100 fine. Why? Because we didn\u2019t register the car at reception even though we were staying there<\/strong>. If you\u2019re planning to drive in London or Oxford, it\u2019s important to know about the Congestion Charge<\/strong>. In Central London, the Congestion Charge zone covers areas like Westminster, Soho, and the City of London. It applies Monday to Friday, 7am\u20136pm<\/strong>, and costs \u00a315 per day<\/strong>. You can pay online, through the TfL app, or set up Auto Pay. If you don\u2019t pay by midnight the next day, you risk a fine of up to \u00a3160.<\/p>\nIn addition to the Congestion Charge, some vehicles may also be subject to the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone)<\/strong>, which applies 24\/7 to older cars that don\u2019t meet emission standards.<\/p>\nOxford has a similar scheme called the Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ)<\/strong>, launched in the city centre. Unlike London\u2019s flat daily fee, Oxford charges drivers per entry, with costs depending on your vehicle type. Electric cars pay nothing, while petrol and diesel cars can be charged up to \u00a310 per day<\/strong>.<\/p>\nIf you\u2019re renting a car, check whether it meets ULEZ or ZEZ standards to avoid unexpected charges.<\/p>\n
For many visitors, using public transport can be easier and cheaper when exploring city centres. But if you do drive, make sure you know the rules and pay the charges to avoid penalties.<\/p>\n
Things to pack for the UK (even in summer)<\/strong><\/h3>\nUK weather is super unpredictable \u2014 we went during summer, and it still rained half the time! So here\u2019s what I\u2019d recommend bringing:<\/p>\n
\n- Umbrella \u2013 a must, no matter what season<\/li>\n
- Raincoat or waterproof jacket \u2013 easier than carrying an umbrella<\/li>\n
- Water-resistant shoes \u2013 or bring rain covers for your shoes, can get it online from Shoppee or Taobao.<\/li>\n
- Extra pair of shoes \u2013 in case one gets soaked<\/li>\n
- Extra socks \u2013 wet socks = instant regret<\/li>\n
- Light layers \u2013 weather changes fast, especially in the evenings<\/li>\n
- Some summer clothes \u2013 for the occasional warm day<\/li>\n
- Reusable water bottle \u2013 many hotels don\u2019t provide bottled water, but do have water dispenser<\/li>\n
- Slippers for the room \u2013 most UK hotels don\u2019t provide slippers (unlike China or Japan)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
