{"id":412,"date":"2017-01-18T09:38:45","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T09:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/?p=412"},"modified":"2019-01-05T23:49:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-05T23:49:49","slug":"thai-getaway-self-drive-day-7-chiang-mai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/2017\/01\/thai-getaway-self-drive-day-7-chiang-mai\/","title":{"rendered":"Thailand Self Drive &#8211; Day 7 &#8211; Chiang Mai &#8211; River Ride on Elephant in Mae Wang Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thailand Self drive Chiang Mai &#8211; Elephant Camp &#8211; Day 7 &#8211; 30 Dec 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Tweechol Botanical Garden &#8211; tram ride, bicycle riding, petting zoo<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Today is the day 7 of our Self drive in Thailand and our highlight of the day is Elephant camp but before we checked out of the Horizon Hotel, we stayed a bit longer in the morning to explore the most beautiful botanical garden in Chiang Mai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Tweechol Botanical Garden is part of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=71885\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort<\/a><\/strong> property that I stayed in. \u00a0The botanical garden is worth to explore. It has one of the largest collections of plants in Thailand\u00a0 collected over the years. I personally think that this is one of the well kept gardens I have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_083911e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-425\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_083911e-1024x483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tram Ride<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We hopped on the tram free of charge as we were guests staying in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=71885\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort<\/a><\/strong>. We managed to catch the first tram at 930am and toured around the whole Tweechol Botanical Garden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_084210.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-426\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_084210-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tram operator spoke in Thai but I can still enjoy the beautiful garden and searching for the English signboard to understand the plants and herb. \u00a0It only took 20 to 30 mins to tour around the whole Botanical garden.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many delights of Tweechol Botanic Garden is an outstanding display of topiary in the shape of birds and animals. \u00a0I spotted a long-necked, cute herbivorous dinosaurs<span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">\u00a0with no sharp teeth!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.625;\" href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_090956fix.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-464\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_090956fix-1024x602.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the 30 mins tram ride, I decided to rent a bicycle to explore slowly on my own and to get a closer look. Rental bicycle is 30 baht, you could also rent the golf buggy or rent a boat to paddle in the pond.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bicycle Riding in the\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">Tweechol Botanical<\/span>\u00a0Garden<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2522 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e-436x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"436\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e-436x1024.jpg 436w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e-128x300.jpg 128w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e-768x1803.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092520e.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was such a wonderful place to relax and wander but I strongly recommend to renting a bicycle. \u00a0Riding on this cute little bike in the early morning Chiang Mai breeze was such an enjoyable day to start with.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-481\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092959e-872x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"686\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Horizon hotel is actually situated in Tweechol Botanical Garden, the Horizon hotel is called resort in the botanical garden which\u00a0was originated by Mr.Tweesackdi Sesaweech and his wife, Chalarng Sesaweech. \u00a0Both has strong passion in gardening as I can see the garden was very well maintained. \u00a0A lot of hard work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_091931.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-430\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_091931-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The paths are well paved and it was easy ride on bikes and very nice to walk on. \u00a0I stopped by to visit the flower garden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_093345.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1092 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_093345-615x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"972\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The moment when I walked in, I found beautiful of flowering plants, with blooms that are colorful and fragrant.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Orchid Garden<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230day7.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1091 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230day7-790x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"757\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Great day to start some photo session. \u00a0The temperature was still cool, normally it started to go higher and hotter from 11am onwards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_094710e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-433\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_094710e-443x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Petting zoo &#8211; Thai Deer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is beauty in every turn and a calm and serene feel. \u00a0This garden is enchanting including a small petting zoo with a white peacock and other exotic birds. \u00a0I stopped by a small petting zoo and found there were few Thai deers sitting lazily and not looking at me at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_095518.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-434\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_095518-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The moment I took the plant from\u00a0basket to feed them, they started to like me very much.\u00a0It was very fun to see them eating the plants from my hands. They grabbed the plants from my hand and gobble like a hungry ghost. \u00a0I can also hear the loud crunching sound when they were munching the plant. \u00a0I was actually a bit worried these Thai deer would bite my hands. \u00a0When I looked closer, I found that they have beautiful straight teeth, it looked really funny to me. Their teeth look like they have just done the correction with braces. \u00a0Super straight!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_095612-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1069 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_095612-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent about one and half hour in this wonderful garden oasis. My Biking experience was relaxing and great!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092755e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-431\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_092755e-451x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elephant Camp Mae Wang<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We left the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/partners\/partnersearch.aspx?cid=1769828&amp;pcs=1&amp;hid=71885\">Horizon Village &amp; Resort<\/a> in Tweechol Botanical Garden at around 11am and headed to today highlight &#8211; The elephant camp. \u00a0It was an hour and a half drive to reach Mae Wang where the elephant camp is. \u00a0There were few elephant camps around that area. \u00a0Most Elephant Camps usually put on Elephant shows where the Elephants show off their various skills, such as drawing, play music or kicking the ball. \u00a0The one we went did not have any show, I prefer not to see the elephant show as I thought it was cruel to these lovely creatures.<\/p>\n<p>When we reached Mae Wang, we had a hard time finding\u00a0the Mae wang elephant camp, we stopped and asked around but the people were just pointing here and there, still we could not find the camp. \u00a0Then we drove to the main street in Mae Wang, there were many stalls selling postcards, little thing and drinks. \u00a0I saw many tourists stopping by and get on a tuk tuk or van to somewhere. \u00a0I asked the man in the shop if he knew where the Mae Wang Elephant camp was. \u00a0Coincidently he told us he owned an Elephant camp and can bring us there. \u00a0An elephant ride through the jungle and river takes 45 mins and cost 1000 baht.\u00a0 If you have 2 pax, you can share the cost. \u00a0The elephant can carried up to 3 pax. \u00a0One person sit on his neck and the other two can sit comfortably on his body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chiang-mai.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-750\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chiang-mai-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The owner of the shop told us we can either drive our own car and follow him or he can also drive us there. \u00a0We actually wanted to drive our rental car and follow him\u00a0but he\u00a0insisted to drive us there. \u00a0Because his English was not too good, I personally did not understand\u00a0the reason why we must follow him in his car.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the journey in his car, I could not sit still. \u00a0I was nervous and thought he may robbed us. I noticed he was driving us further away from town and has gone into a deep jungles. \u00a0It was getting creepy so I asked him,&#8221; \u00a0where is the Elephant camp, \u00a0why I still can&#8217;t\u00a0see any elephant?&#8221; . \u00a0The man calmed me down and spoken in broken English, &#8221; No worry, Elephant camp there. \u00a0I drive many many people to elephant camp. Don&#8217;t worry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I have no choice but to trust him for the time being but still feeling very worried. The thought of jumping out of his car flashed from my mind from time to time. \u00a0The roads get really bumpy and before I could be more worried, he stopped and park his car and told us we have arrived at the Elephant camp. \u00a0I still have doubt on him as the sign of elephants were not being seen at all.<\/p>\n<p>He lead us to the bamboo bridge and across\u00a0the other side of the bridge were the elephant camp. \u00a0I was relieved and meanwhile can&#8217;t wait to meet up with the elephants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134022e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1071\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134022e-838x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"714\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The man told us the elephant camp was his family owned and operated business. \u00a0We also saw his mom bring in load of sugar canes to the camp by the truck. \u00a0Elephants love to eat, sugar canes are one of their daily diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_142517e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1074\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_142517e-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was given a basket full of banana and sugar canes. \u00a0I started to feed the elephants and petting them. \u00a0It was a real experience with elephants so up close.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.625;\" href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134342e.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-440\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134342e-1024x940.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also noticed the elephants in the camp are cared and loved! \u00a0The guides were friendly\u00a0and the elephants were obviously very well looked after.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.625;\">\u00a0The guides\u00a0frequently spoke with these creatures in Thai and the elephants responded back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134429.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-441\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkerten.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20161230_134429-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The elephants eat a lot and poo a lot too. \u00a0I was shocked to see how huge it was the elephant dung, as big as a soccer ball. \u00a0Some elephants in Thailand is being used to produce some of the world\u2019s most expensive coffee.
