Hutong\/\u80e1\u540c in Shanghai<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am more of a country person so Hutong always interests me and I wanted to find out more in the Shanghai Hutong. \u00a0I was hoping to capture the scene of Shanghai women wearing the qipao walking in the hutong of old Shanghai.<\/p>\n

Hutong or Longtang in Shanghai is narrow streets or alleys with old buildings from ancient times. \u00a0Since I could not find any Qipao woman, (I actually knew the chances are slim) hence I gave up and navigate to go to Yuyuan. It is quite hard to find the entrance of Yuyuan as I am almost lost in the Hutong.<\/p>\n

Clothes were hang between two roofs top, quite an interesting sight in Hutong.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Hutongs represent an important cultural element that you won’t know what to expect when you in these narrow streets.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Found a small convenient stall selling vegetables and frozen food and drinks to the locals who may live in the hutong.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Hutong can be found more in Beijing and it normally formed by lines of Shiheyuan\/\u56db\u5408\u9662 – house with a courtyard surrounded by buildings on all four sides.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Aging Population\u00a0in \u00a0Hutong<\/strong><\/p>\n

I noticed most people who stay in Hutong are old people, the young all go to live in modern apartments which have better facilities.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Yu Garden\/ \u8c6b\u56ed<\/strong><\/p>\n

After half an hour of walking, I finally found Yu Yuan. \u00a0It is located beside the City God Temple\/\u57ce\u968d\u5e99 in the Old City of Shanghai.<\/p>\n

Great Rockery in Yuyuan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Upon entering Yuyuan, you will find a big rockery, which is known as the Great Rockery. \u00a0It is the oldest and largest rockery in the area of the south Yangtze River.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Yuyuan was built in the Ming Dynasty by a high rank officer called Pan Yuanduan. He built this garden for his parents to enjoy their old age.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Yu Yuan is an excellent model of classical Chinese gardening architecture under the state of preservation. The garden is famous for a number of architectural marvels. \u00a0I was standing in front of a huge old door which does not open anymore.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This place is serene and peaceful and the garden is big about 2 hectares. \u00a0Obviously I need to take a rest and get some sunshine while enjoying the craving on the wooden doors.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Yuyuan Garden is a major site for kinds of cultural and recreational activities in Shanghai in the past and at present. \u00a0It is still having a various exhibitions of flowers, calligraphy, painting, unusual stones, and other recreation. \u00a0While I was there, I notice there is a calligraphy exhibition going on.<\/p>\n

Check out the two windows in the below picture, there are in a different patterns.<\/p>\n

Moon Gate<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking in this tranquil garden makes a great getaway from the busy city of Shanghai.\u00a0 The below picture is the round door that can be found in most classical Chinese gardens, also known as ‘moon gate’. \u00a0The purpose of these gates is to serve as a very inviting entrance into gardens of the rich upper class in China.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You cannot find many ancient buildings in Shanghai except coming here.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is best to come here with an experienced local guide who will explain all the details to you. \u00a0Every stone and every corner of the architecture has a story behind it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Not all places are good for photo opportunities, some scenes have a high rise building at the background.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There is a stage in the Yuyuan garden where the guest was being entertained in the old days.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

2 stories of the spectator’s seats with wooden chairs. \u00a0I saw a few workers were doing the cleaning and wiping. \u00a0This place is ancient-looking but still well maintained. \u00a0I wonder if this stage is being used for Chinese Opera?<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Yuyuan old Street<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a Yuyuan Old Street with stores selling local souvenirs. \u00a0It is quite dim when you walked in.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Chenghuangmiao\/\u57ce\u968d\u5e99 – City God Temple of Shanghai<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chenghuangmiao\/\u57ce\u968d\u5e99<\/strong>\u00a0is used as the name of the commercial district near the temple. \u00a0I had a hard time finding the temple. \u00a0Most people who came here did not really bother to go visit the temple, it is more of visiting the commercial district around\u00a0Chenghuangmiao.<\/p>\n

This is more of a shopping place for the local souvenirs and restaurants and street food.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

City God Temple of Shanghai\/\u4e0a\u6d77\u57ce\u968d\u5e99<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Shanghai old street<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again this is more of shopping for Chinese souvenirs and some antique shops. \u00a0Actually antique is not allowed to bring out from China.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Shanghai is also the place for Qipao. \u00a0Qipao is not cheap in Shanghai but is good to try one out while in Shanghai. \u00a0I did not try out any because it is too cold to wear Qipao in the season I traveled.<\/p>\n

Comics in the 70’s and 80’s<\/strong><\/p>\n

A shop selling very old comics books, suitable for those who keep for collection.<\/p>\n

Local comestic –\u00a0Xue Hua Gao <\/strong><\/p>\n

Lao Shanghai Xue Hua Gao make a great gift, these local cosmetic was nicely packed in traditional packing. \u00a0Beautiful Shanghai women used this product to keep them fair and flawless.<\/p>\n

Traditional Chinese Doorknobs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traditional Chinese Doorknobs were seen selling at Old Shanghai Street. \u00a0Some form of lion and dragon shape of doorknobs were seen. \u00a0Dragon\u2019s heads offered a projection of strength and protection; gargoyles represented the malignant spirits barred from entry, harnessed to serve both as a call and a warning to others who may trespass. \u00a0Lion head symbolizes strength, pride, protection, and supremacy. The Kings of the jungle but even so a lion door knocker serves the master within, which implies those who dwell behind those doors are mightier still. \u00a0So have you decided which one to buy? \u00a0Lion or Dragon?<\/p>\n

What to buy in old Shanghai Street? \u00a0You can see many shops selling silk scarves, I think it is great gift to bring home as it is very light.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Gamble on Rocks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chinese people love rocks and Chinese people love gambling also. \u00a0It depends on how much and how is the quality of Jade hidden in the rocks. \u00a0The better or higher quality of the Jade, the more money you gain.\u00a0 It really all depends on your luck, some people spent million to buy a big rock which did not have any Jade inside the rock when it gets cut open! \u00a0Some turned instant millionaire once found the rock they gamble has a high quality of Jade. \u00a0I do not have the guts to walk in the shop but only looking from outside as I prefer to stay away from gamble. \u00a0 Gamble on Rocks is more popular in Yunnan area, near Myanmar, where most Jade is from.<\/p>\n

Lujiazui – Modern Shanghai – 3 Major Skyscrapers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let’s find out about modern Shanghai!<\/p>\n

Lujiazui is the CBD\/central business district of Shanghai and one of the financial centers of China. \u00a0In fact, Lujiazui has already surplus Hong Kong financial center. \u00a0You can see many skyscrapers here, \u00a03 major tall buildings are Shanghai Tower<\/strong><\/a>, Jinmao Tower<\/a>, <\/strong>and World Financial Center<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0Coming to Shanghai is more of admiring the tall buildings, especially for the local tourists who came from the countryside.<\/p>\n

Shanghai World Financial Center\/Tower<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

If you look closely, you will notice the top of the building is like a Japanese Katana sword, refer to the below picture. \u00a0It was said once this building was completed in 2008, many bad things happened in China, such as Wen Chuan Great Earthquake and China Milk Scandal. \u00a0 This building involves multinational firms, including Japanese Developer, (no wonder it looks like Katana) and American and European investors. \u00a0Can you see how sharp the edge is? \u00a0Quite Scary.<\/p>\n

Shanghai Tower<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Shanghai Tower is the tallest and it was built to supersede Shanghai World Financial Tower. \u00a0Shanghai Tower was owned by Shanghai Government and it is 632 m high whereas SWFT is only 492 m high.\u00a0 It is the world’s second-tallest building (behind Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, 828 m). \u00a0This building was built according to Fengshui and to overshadow Shanghai World Financial Tower which looks like a Katana sword.<\/p>\n

The one on the far right is Shanghai Tower, the shape is like two overlapping ‘tubes’ also look like a thermos flask. \u00a0It is so much taller than the 2 on the left.<\/p>\n

Jinmao Tower<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

I went up to Jin Mao Tower to have a panoramic view of Shanghai city. This is the cheapest tower to go up as compared to the two taller buildings beside Jin Mao.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

BASE Jumping from Jin Mao Tower<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jinmao Tower has 88 floors and the number 8 is always a lucky number and brings luck to the Chinese belief. \u00a0If you dare enough you may want to try base jumping from Jin Mao Tower. \u00a0A base jump is conducted from a fixed position with the use of a parachute and it is slightly different from Bungee Jumping. BASE<\/strong> also stands for B<\/strong>uilding, A<\/strong>ntennas, S<\/strong>pans(bridges) and E<\/strong>arth. \u00a0Of course, I have no gut to try out this daring spot. \u00a0I was already feeling dizzy and shaky legs when walking near the glass window in Jin Mao Tower.<\/p>\n

From Jin Mao tower, I was trying to look for the most iconic landmark in Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl Tower. \u00a0Captured this iconic Tower!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Mobike – Rental bike system in Shanghai City<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you walked on the busy streets of Shanghai, you can see plenty of orange bikes park on the streets. \u00a0These are rental bike by a company called Mobike. You can just pick up a bike by scanning the QR bar code stickers on the bike. \u00a0It only cost you RMB 1 to use for half an hour.<\/p>\n

This is a great system for you to explore around the busy city of Shanghai.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Jinke Road Station\/\u91d1\u79d1\u8def\u7ad9<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I went to Jinke Road station and have my lunch there. \u00a0This place is more for the office building and more like some technopark.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Bread Talk and Toast Box were found in the nearby shopping malls.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Lunch – Beef Noodle<\/strong><\/p>\n

I went to a local store to have the beef noodle RMB 25 with suan cai\/sour Vegetable or also known as a pickle. \u00a0I also ordered an additional smashed cucumber with sesame oil – RMB 7. \u00a0Things are not cheap in Shanghai, after all, Shanghai is the most expensive city in China. \u00a0Smashed Cucumber with sesame oil is a popular small dish, I ordered almost every day. \u00a0If you think it is healthy, think twice, look at the oil in the dish? \u00a0Pretty scary.<\/p>\n
