China Guiyang and Dejiang in October

Exploring Dejiang: A Hidden Gem in Guizhou

Nestled in the heart of Guizhou province, Dejiang is one of those places that feels like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Unlike the bustling, tourist-packed cities of China, Dejiang offers a serene escape, making it the perfect spot for those looking to experience authentic rural life and the beauty of nature without the crowds.

A Small Town with Big Charm

Dejiang may be a small town, but it packs a punch when it comes to scenic beauty. Surrounded by lush green mountains, rolling hills, and pristine rivers, it’s a nature lover’s paradise. The fresh air and peaceful atmosphere make it feel like you’re stepping into a completely different world—one where time slows down, and the beauty of nature takes center stage.  Go visit 乌江密境.

The Heart of Miao Culture

One of the most fascinating aspects of Dejiang is its rich cultural heritage, particularly from the Miao ethnic group. The Miao are known for their colorful clothing, intricate silver jewelry, and vibrant festivals. The town is an excellent place to learn about their traditions, from the customs of daily life to the lively celebrations that happen throughout the year.

Food, Glorious Food

If you love spicy food, Dejiang will quickly become a favorite. The town is known for its love of chili peppers, and meals here are often packed with bold, spicy flavors that are guaranteed to wake up your taste buds. Whether it’s the local hotpot, spicy stir-fries, or chili-infused dishes, every bite is an adventure in flavor. Don’t forget to try the famous 酸汤 (sour soup) or the fiery 辣椒炒肉 (chili stir-fried pork)—both local delicacies that showcase the town’s bold flavors. Si wawa 丝娃娃 is a must try street food.

Traditional Markets and Local Life

While exploring Dejiang, be sure to check out the local markets, where you’ll find everything from fresh produce and handmade goods to colorful textiles and traditional crafts. These markets offer a glimpse into daily life in Dejiang, where the locals are friendly, welcoming, and always ready to share a smile or a story.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the beautiful, traditional hats worn by married women of the Miao community—an iconic symbol of their cultural identity.

A Town That’s Easy on the Wallet

One of the best things about Dejiang is how affordable everything is. From accommodation to meals and souvenirs, you’ll find that the prices are much lower than in more tourist-heavy cities. It’s the perfect place for budget travelers looking to get the most out of their experience without breaking the bank.

Conclusion

Dejiang is a place where you can disconnect from the fast pace of city life and reconnect with nature and culture. Whether you’re hiking through the stunning mountains, sampling local delicacies, or learning about the traditions of the Miao people, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained. And with its peaceful atmosphere, friendly locals, and affordable prices, Dejiang is a destination that’s truly worth the visit. So, next time you’re in Guizhou, don’t miss out on this charming, off-the-beaten-path town.

How many days in Dejiang?  2 -3 days

Where to stay? 德江灵犀国际酒店

This is one of the best hotels in Dejiang. Since Dejiang is only a 5th-tier city, there aren’t many options to choose from.  Another high end hotel in Dejiang is 德江黔中酒店

To get to Dejiang, here’s a simple way to plan your journey:

  1. Arrive in Guangzhou
Start by flying into Guangzhou (Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport), which is a major international gateway in China.
  2. Connect to Guiyang
From Guangzhou, take a connecting flight to Guiyang (Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport). There are frequent domestic flights between Guangzhou and Guiyang, and the flight time is typically around 1.5 hours.
  3. Travel from Guiyang to Dejiang
Once you arrive in Guiyang, you can catch a private rental car to Dejiang. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, and will take you through scenic Guizhou countryside, giving you a taste of the region’s beautiful landscapes along the way.

Alternatively, you could also take a bus or train from Guiyang to Dejiang, but a private car is more convenient if you’re looking for comfort and flexibility.

Guiyang city

I didn’t have enough time to explore Guiyang, so I spent an entire day in Qingyan Ancient Town. It’s about half an hour from the city of Guiyang.

Jiaxiu Tower (甲秀楼)

Located on the Nanming River, Jiaxiu Tower is a famous landmark in Guiyang. It’s a beautiful traditional structure with historical significance. The tower offers great views of the river and the surrounding area. You can also see many locals playing cards or gathering in the park.

At night, you can watch a show in Guiyang called “Wind of Colorful Guizhou”/《多彩贵州风》 (Duōcǎi Guìzhōu Fēng). Book your ticket from trip.com in advance.

To get around in Guiyang city, call didi.

Where to stay in Guiyang?  East Hotel Guiyang

East Hotel in Guiyang is a modern and upscale hotel offering a comfortable stay for both business and leisure travelers. It is well-known for its contemporary design, high-quality service, and convenient location. The hotel is situated in a central area, making it easy to access key attractions, shopping areas, and transportation hubs in Guiyang.
